CPAP Intolerance

When used correctly, CPAP is an incredibly effective device for alleviating sleep apnea symptoms, achieving restful sleep, and avoiding the serious health risks associated with sleep apnea. However, many patients, up to 75% of CPAP users, cannot tolerate full long-term compliance due to its cumbersome and intrusive nature. CPAP tolerance is defined by being able to wear the device for a minimum of 4 hours per night for 5 nights a week. Unfortunately the majority of individuals sleep 7 nights a week for an average of 8 hours a night. CPAP compliance is less than 50% the first year (especially with mild to moderate OSA), drops by 50% again after the first year, and then drops by 50% again after the second year leading to a long-term compliance of approximately 20-25%.
