Sleep Apnea Diagnosis

The primary method for diagnosing Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a sleep study, known as polysomnography. A sleep technician administers and attends the study. Numerous physiological monitors are attached to the patient to record nightttime breathing, brain activity, and physical activity. An EEG allows the physician to see if the patient is reaching all the stages of sleep to the appropriate depth and if the patient is being aroused excessively from these stages. Additional monitors;measure heart rate and airflow.;

Take home sleep tests have now become much more common as indicated by insurance carriers. There are still some instances where an in lab sleep test will be the test of choice based on the individual's specific symptoms.

While qualified dentists play an important role in treating OSA, dentists are not permitted;to diagnose sleep apnea. Diagnosis should be done by an accredited medical sleep physician.
